2008 Pre-Season Overview
January 23, 2008

The Indiana Tech Warriors are entering the 2008 season as defending Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Champions. The Warriors hope to continue on positive momentum from last seasons 40-16 record. With a returning nucleus of experienced players and new coming talent, the squad should have an opportunity to compete for the WHAC title and a long awaited trip to the NAIA World Series. It has been since 2003 that Indiana Tech has been to Lewiston, Idaho and of course, the Warriors are once again striving to reach their goal. “We have very high objectives for the 2008 season, and believe that these goals are attainable. We need to peak at the right time for us to be successful.” Over the summer, Indiana Tech named a new head coach in Kip McWilliams. Kip is replacing Randy Stegall who has taken a position at Embry-Riddle. Coach McWilliams is entering his first season as a head coach. “Transition is always difficult for the athletes and coaching staff… I believe we have a good group of young men who are beginning to believe in the system and are committed to the program….We are looking forward to the season…” The infield returns 3 starters from the 2007 season that will anchor the defense, senior Captains Jason Ferens, Shane Tirey, and Shawn Placie. Transfers Chad Geier, Elijah Chee, Gustavo Valasquez and sophomore R.J. Meeks will provide depth up the middle and at third. “I am looking forward to the different combinations we have in our infield which will be the strength of our defense.” Losing some key outfielders off of the 2007 team, will give the opportunity for some returning players and transfers to compete for some time. Senior returners in Jeremy Parker, Brad Gettelfinger and Dan Cody could play important roles on the squad this season. As well, valuable additions Steve Weigle, and Steve Dowding have shown great skills to benefit the 2008 Warriors. “We are still making strides to improve defensively, but I am excited for the potential offensive production from these athletes.” Inexperience behind the dish could be a weakness of the Warriors this season. “The talent is their, it is just making some adjustments and believing in good old-fashioned hard work…” Behind the dish will be three transfers fighting for some time. Will Richards, Johnnie Crane and Shane Starry. On the bump, the pitching will be lead by two senior Captains in Mike Linder, and Kris Begley. “We have a level pitching staff… Most of our pitchers are similar and provide depth to our bullpen. . .We need some guys to step up and win a role in the pitching rotation…” Seniors Dan Collar, Bob Scott and Dan Cody have the opportunity to become key impact pitchers on the staff. All in all, the 2008 Indiana Tech Warriors are reloading for the season and looking to compete for the WHAC, Region VIII, Super Regional and World Series Championships. “As every Indiana Tech team in the past had a goal to attend Lewiston, Idaho at the end of May. We will not accept anything less. This is the ultimate achievement and we want to be there.”
