Softball Region VIII tournament Recap
May 10, 2007
Battle Creek, MI – Indiana Tech’s Warrior softball team finished its season on Wednesday, May 9th, after being eliminated from the NAIA Regional Tournament. The tournament featured the top three teams from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and the Mid-Central Conference.
In the team’s first game of the tournament, they faced Indiana Wesleyan. Although the team did put up 5 hits in the game, the only one that converted on the scoreboard was a solo home run by team most valuable player and WHAC Pitcher of the Year Jessica Williams. The Warriors were defeated by the Wildcats 6-1.
In the second round of the tournament and facing elimination, the Warriors were pitted against Aquinas University. Although they fell behind early in the game when the Saints scored in each of the first three innings to take a 7-1 advantage, the Warriors began their offensive recovery in the fourth. Prior to the fourth inning, the single run was scored after a double by Erica McBride and an RBI single by Sonya Benavides.
In the fourth inning, the Warriors scored three runs to narrow the lead to 7-4. With one out in the inning, third baseman Sarah Hershkowitz singled up the middle and advanced to second when Jessica Shaffer was walked. All-Conference outfielder Dana Shaddox singled to load the bases. With one out and bases loaded, Jessica Williams drove in one run while a fielder’s choice error from the Saints shortstop allowed a second run to score. First baseman and relief pitcher Melanie Crandall singled to bring in the third run of the inning.
After the Warriors gave up another run in the fourth inning bringing the score to 8-4 in favor of the Saints, they unloaded in the fifth inning behind base hits from April Alexander, Sarah Hershkowitz, Jessica Williams, and Melanie Crandall. The Warriors also benefited from two walks and a throwing error by the Saints third baseman. When the top half of the inning came to a close, the Warriors had tallied 7 runs to take an 11-8 lead. The Warriors added one more run in the sixth inning when Hershkowitz singled to right field, stole second, and was batted in by a double from Jessica Shaffer.
After the Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors brought in relief pitcher Melanie Crandall to close out the game. The team eventually allowed one more run to score but held on to get their first ever Region VIII tournament win, 12-9. Nicole Winger earned the win for the team and Crandall picked up the save.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, they couldn’t keep the offensive momentum going into their next game against the Marian Knights. Marian capitalized on a 5-run first inning drive and went on to eliminate the Warriors from the tournament 8-0.
The Warriors finished third in the conference and completed their season with a 25-22 record. This was the team’s first qualification and also their first win in the Regional Tournament.
