Warriors Mourn Loss of Teammate
October 8, 2008

The Indiana Tech community is mourning the sudden loss of Liz Lykowski, a defensive specialist for the Warrior volleyball team who died unexpectedly on Sunday. Lykowski, a senior business administration major, had a congenital heart defect that could only have been detected through surgery. She was 21 years old. Lykowski had been Indiana Tech’s first out-of-state recruits when the women’s volleyball program was reinstated in 2005 and was one of four seniors who had been with the team since its beginning. “Liz was a very compassionate, kind, hard-working, and determined young woman,” said volleyball coach Kirsta Solberg. “She was also a fun-loving prankster! She was very talented on and off the court and worked very hard to be the best at what she loved. She was truly a blessing to know.” Funeral services will be held near her hometown of Ottawa Lake, Mich. Calling hours are 2 to 9 pm. Thursday, October 9, at Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Road, Temperance, Mich. The service will be 11 a.m. Friday, October 10, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 1690 W. Sterns Road, Temperance, Mich. For directions, visit www.PawlakFuneralHome.com. Hundreds of students, faculty, and staff gathered for a candlelight vigil at Indiana Tech on Monday to honor and remember Lykowski. Team captain Laura Booker, who also was one of the team’s founding members, was one of those who shared her memories at the vigil. “Liz was very important to every single one of us,” she told mourners at the vigil. “She was loved by so many – not just by us on the team.” Indiana Tech volleyball matches for October 7, 9, 10 and 11 were canceled to allow team members and coaches some time to cope with their grief and attend the funeral services. 2008 Season Preview
August 8, 2008

The Indiana Tech volleyball team finds itself in a very unique situation for the 2008 season. After 3 seasons of playing since the program was reinstated in 2005, the program will be honored with its first true senior class for the Lady Warriors. Seniors Laura Booker, Ashtyn Humerickhouse, Karly White, and Liz Lykowski all came in as freshman in the first season in 2005. With no one to look to for leadership but each other, they created their own path and have done an amazing job thus far, taking their team to the Regional Tournament the past two of the three years. Joined by transfers Staci Stork in 2006 and Kelli Brown in 2007, all 6 seniors have a lot to be proud of and great reason to be looked up to by the incoming freshmen. Working hard on the court and in the classroom, the Lady Warriors hope to continue the success they have started and taken it even further than before. In 2007, the Lady Warriors ended their great season with a record of 25-19 at the Regional Semi-Finals to eventual National Tournament representatives Madonna. They also took the 3rd place finish in the conference tournament behind Madonna and Cornerstone and even spent a week holding the 35th spot on the NAIA National Rankings. The Lady Warriors graduated 4 starters from last seasons squad in Jenny Vogelgesang, Korinne Lewis, Erin McCann, and Morgan Anson. Anson will return as the Graduate Assistant and Assistant Coach. Although the Warriors have graduated quite a few off last season's starting team, there is a strong group coming back. Three time All-Conference selection Ashtyn Humerickhouse will be a big threat in the offense for the Warriors and three time Champion of Character Laura Booker will be returning to her position as setter for her final season at Indiana Tech. Melanie Forman, a freshman from Lakewood High School in Hastings, Michigan will be joining Booker in the setting position. The front line joining Humerickhouse will be returners Kelli Brown, Ashley Jenkins, and Amber Birky. They will also be joined by stand-out newcomers Erika Stouder a sophomore middle blocker transfer from Ancilla College and Ashley Hamilton, a freshman outside hitter out of Northridge High School in Middlebury, Indiana. The back court will see a great amount of experience with seniors Liz Lykowski and Staci Stork to lead the way. They will be joined by junior college transfer Michelle Fitzpatrick from Parkland College and freshman Alli Carithers also from Northridge High School in Middlebury, Indiana. The Lady Warriors also look to excel in the classroom. Last season, 5 student-athletes were named NAIA Academic All-Americans and the varsity had a team GPA of 3.53. Indiana Tech Volleyball is very proud of the accomplishments that these student-athletes have performed. Performing in the classroom is just as important to this team as performance on the court.
