2008 Women's Soccer All Conference selections
November 12, 2008

The Women’s Soccer team was honored with two members being selected to the All-Conference teams.  Junior Danielle Luther (Chesterton, IN / IPFW) was voted to the second team.  Luther helped lead a young Warrior team and tallied two goals and three assists.  Freshman defender Christina Will (Guilford, IN / East Central) was named honorable mention.  Will was one of four freshman that anchored the Warrior defense.  In addition, goalkeeper Mallory Xurvein (Ramsey, MN / Anoka) was named to the Champions of Character team.  Xurvein led the conference in saves with 146 (8.11 per game).  Juniors Ashley Mejia (Yoder, IN / Bishop Luers), Alex Saba (Dearborn Hts., MI / Crestwood) and Tracie Ball (Pinckney, MI / Pinckney) are representing the Warriors on the All-Academic team.

Warriors finish the season with a win
November 10, 2008

The Women's Soccer team finished their 2008 season with a conference win over Concordia University, 3-2.  Junior Tracie Ball (Pinckney, MI / Pinckney) started the scoring in the 22nd minute with a rocket that hit the upper left hand corner.  Ball finishes the season as the leading scorer with five goals.  After a Cardinal penalty kick tied the game up, junior Ashley Mejia (Ft. Wayne, IN / Bishop Luers) off a cross from junior Danielle Luther (Chesterton, IN / IPFW). Concordia tied the game up again in the 50th minute but three minutes later, Mejia found the back of the net again with an assist from Christina Will (Guilford, IN / East Central) for the eventual game winner.  The Warriors finish the season with a 4-13-1 mark.

Warriors improve in spite of loss to Saints
October 30, 2008

The Women's Soccer team hosted Siena Heights Saints Tuesday afternoon and despite losing 2-0, the team play was improved over their previous meeting in September.  On a cold, bitter afternoon, not usually associated with soccer, the two teams battled it out under a cloudy sky.  As both teams tried to maintain some control, the Saints managed to break through and score in the 15th minute and six minutes later, they found the net again to gain a 2-0 advantage.  At halftime, the Warriors regained their composure and in the second half, they clamped down on the Saints attack and outshot them 6-5.  The Warriors will finish their regular season next Thursday when they travel to Ann Arbor, MI to play Concordia at 3pm.

Davenport rallies to defeat Warriors
October 27, 2008

The Women's Soccer team suffered its fourth overtime loss of the season at Davenport University, on Saturday, 4-3.  The Warriors started out in fine fashion, scoring twice within a minute of each other for a quick 2-0 lead.  Junior Danielle Luther (Chesterton, IN / IPFW) started the scoring and junior Al Saba (Dearborn Hts., MI / Crestwood) followed with her team leading fourth goal of the season.  Davenport pulled one back to make it 2-1, but freshman Christina Parrot (Fredericksburg, OH / Waynedale) scored her first collegiate goal off a Saba assist to increase the Tech lead to 3-1.  Davenport came out strong in the second half and fought back hard to tie the score at 3-3 but the Warriors finished the match on a flurry and nearly pulled off the victory.  In overtime, both teams attempted to position themselves for a win until the second overtime found Davenport hitting the open net for the winner.  The Warriors will next play Siena Hts. on Tuesday, October 28th for their final home game of the season.

Tech loses to Madonna despite their fine effort
October 22, 2008

Playing arguably, their best game of the year, the Women's Soccer team lost to Madonna on Tuesday, 5-1.  The Warriors played with heart and determination and never backed down to the nationally ranked Crusaders.  The halftime score read 1-0 but the Warriors felt they could easily tie it up in the second half.  The teams battled back and forth in the early part of the second half, until Madonna's Jessica Austin broke through on a defensive miscue and pushed the lead to two.  The Warriors answered almost immediately when junior Ashley Mejia (Ft. Wayne, IN / Bishop Luers) scored off a cross from junior Danielle Luther (Chesterton, IN / IPFW).  The goal lifted the Warriors until Austin slipped a ball thru the arms of the Tech goalie to switch the momentum.  After the dust settled, the Crusaders had tacked two more on for the final score.  The Warriors look forward to Saturday, October 25th with a rematch with Davenport in Grand Rapids, MI.  Kick-off is at noon.

Aquinas defeats Warriors, 3-0
October 15, 2008

The Women's Soccer team had a brief lapse in the first half that resulted in a 3-0 defeat to the Aquinas Saints.  After a slow start, the Warriors gained momentum until the 25th minute when Emily Wabich was left unmarked at the top of the 18 and slotted in the first goal of the match.  The bleeding would continue for the Warriors as the Saints jumped on them again due to poor marking and scored two more times.  After the half, the Warriors regrouped and stepped up their play but never dented the Aquinas net.  Warrior goalkeeper Mallory Xurvein (Ramsey, MN / Anoka) had nine saves.  The Warriors will next travel to Concordia for a noon match on Saturday, October 18th.

Warriors dominate Crimson Wave
October 13, 2008

The Women's Soccer team jumped all over an under manned Calumet College of St. Joe's and easily defeated the Crimson Wave, 6-0.  The rout started early as the Warriors scored 90 seconds in the game when junior Tracie Ball (Pinckney, MI / Pinckney) scored her fourth goal of the season.  Tech would score three more times before the half as junior Kristina Baker (Brighton, MI / Schoolcraft CC) and freshman Katti Campbell (Newburgh, IN / Castle) tallied one goal and two goals respectively.  In the second half, juniors Al Saba (Dearborn Hts., MI / Crestwood) and Ashley Mejia (Ft. Wayne, IN / Bishop Luers) closed out the scoring with each scoring a goal.  The Warriors will next host Aquinas College on Tuesday, October 14th at 4:00pm as part of a soccer doubleheader with the men's team.

Cornerstone overpowers the Warriors
October 8, 2008

The Women's Soccer team in the first half against Cornerstone played some of their best soccer of the season.  Unfortunately for the Warriors, Cornerstone stepped up their intensity and outplayed the Warriors in route to a 5-0 win.  The Golden Eagles were paced by Liz Meyers (2 goals) and Jessica Brussee ( 1 goal and 1 assist).  The Warriors had some great chances early in the game from junior Danielle Luther (Chesterton, IN / IPFW) and junior Tracie Ball (Pinckney, MI / Pinckney) but both attempts were either thwarted by Cornerstone keeper Julianne Bruining or just missed their mark.  The Warriors next match will be at home on Friday, October 10th at 5:00pm.

Grace edges Warriors, 2-1
October 6, 2008

The Women's Soccer team could not catch a break.  Despite playing some of the best soccer of the season, the visiting Warriors fell to Grace College, 2-1.  Grace jumped on the scoreboard early as Heidi Messer slipped a low shot by Warrior keeper Mallory Xurvein (Ramsey, MN / Anoka) but the Warriors countered back when junior Tracie Ball (Pinckney, MI / Pinckney) found junior Jaimie Riksen (Gobles, MI / Mattawan) on the right flank and Jaimie tapped the ball past the advancing keeper.  The scored held as both sides attempted to break the deadlock and with a minute remaining in the match, Tech was called for a push in the box resulting in a penalty kick.  Grace's Amy Abbitt tucked it neatly into the corner of the net for the final score.  Tech will look to rebound on Tuesday when they host Cornerstone for a 7pm match.

Siena Heights too much for Warriors
October 2, 2008

The Women's Soccer team lost to host Siena Heights, 4-0 on a cool, rainy Tuesday afternoon.  In the first half, Warriors struggled to match the Saints firepower and without the stalwart play of goalkeeper Mallory Xurvein (Ramsey, MN / Anoka) - 11 saves in the first half, the match could have easily been worse.  With the start of the second half, there was a marked improvement on the Warriors' play and several scoring chances but nothing to change the course of the game.  The Warriors will next play host Grace College, on Saturday, October 4th at 3:00pm.

Davenport defeats Warriors, 3-1
September 29, 2008

The Women's Soccer team continues to push forward but the result didn't show the effort.  The Warriors lost to visiting Davenport Panthers, 3-1.  Despite some offensive chances, several breakdowns in the usually stellar Warrior defense resulted in several opportunities that the Panthers couldn't miss.  The lone bright spot was freshman Ashli Follrod (Avon, IN / Avon) scoring her first collegiate goal off an assist from junior Danielle Luther (Chesterton, IN / IPFW).  The Warriors will next travel to Siena Heights for a 4:00pm match on Tuesday, September 30th.

Warriors fall to Madonna, 3-0
September 23, 2008

The Women's Soccer team fell to 2-5-1 on the season on Tuesday, losing a tough conference match to the Madonna Crusaders, 3-0.  The game started quickly as both teams settled into their game but Madonna found a crease in the Warrior defense and Jaclyn Ventimiglia scored in the tenth minute when Tech failed to clear a ball after a restart.  The teams battled on until the Crusaders finally broke down the Warrior defense again and scored in the 60th minute.  Ventimiglia scored her second goal with ten minutes left in the match to complete the scoring.  The Warriors look to rebound when they host Davenport on Saturday for a noon match.  Saturday's game is the first game of a double header with men's soccer to follow at 2:30pm.

Warriors lose in overtime to Aquinas
September 18, 2008

The Women's Soccer team dropped a tough match to hosts Aquinas College in overtime, 1-0.  Despite being overshot 24-10, the Warriors had two great chances to go ahead in the match only to have one miss by the narrowest of margins and the other called back because of the official.  The Warrior defense was up to the task early and often and frustrated the Saints attack.  Aquinas resorted to long ball tactics and trying to shell the Warriors with a barrage of long range passes into the box but the defense held firm.  Saints finally broke down the defense when in the fifth minute of overtime, the Warriors failed to clear the ball in a wild scramble and junior forward Bri Hill of the Saints knocked it in.  The Warriors will next face Concordia on Saturday, September 20th for homecoming weekend.  Kick-off is scheduled for noon as a first part of a double header with the men's soccer team.

Warriors battle the elements and Cornerstone
September 15, 2008

The Women's Soccer Team opened their conference play with a disappointing result, a 3-0 loss to Cornerstone.  Despite the severe weather conditions, the Warriors started out well but in the 15 minute, junior Jessica Brussee found the back of the net and 15 minutes later she had completed the hat-trick and the Golden Eagles were on the way to their first conference win of the season.  The Warriors regrouped in the second half and played better defensively but could not score on Cornerstone despite several chances.  The Warriors will next travel to Aquinas on Tuesday, September 16th for a 4:00pm match.

Women's Soccer drops one to Bethel
September 12, 2008

The final score was not indicative of the effort.  That summarizes the match between the Warriors and the visiting Bethel Pilots.  Despite showing an improved play from the other matches, the Warriors were never able to finish off several chances during the game and the Pilots eventually worn down a tough Tech defense for a 3-0 victory.  Freshman goalkeeper Mallory Xurvein (Ramsey, MN / Anoka) was solid as usual and the rest of the defense was playing well but the Warriors could not put effective pressure on the Pilots defense.  Tech is now 2-2 and head into this weekend with their first conference match against Cornerstone.  Kick-off is noon on Saturday at Cornerstone (Grand Rapids, MI).

Women's Soccer defeat Rochester with a big second half
September 8, 2008

The Women's Soccer team survived a slow start and managed to wake up in the second half to win 3-0 over visiting Rochester College.  Junior midfielder Traci Ball (Pinckney, MI / Pinckney) had a spectacular night scoring all three goals for a hat-trick.  The Warrior defense led by freshman sweeper Christina Will (Guilford, IN / East Central) held Rochester to one shot for the night.  The win improves the Warriors to 2-1 and they next host Bethel College at 5:00pm on Thursday, September 11th.

Warriors prevail over Taylor, 1-0
August 30, 2008

The Indiana Tech Women's Soccer team won their first game of the season, 1-0 over the host Taylor University Trojans.  Junior midfielder Danielle Luther (Fort Wayne, IN / IPFW) found a hole in the Taylor defense and slotted a ball past the keeper from an assist by Ashley Mejia (Fort Wayne, IN / Bishop Luers).  Taylor stepped up the pressure but the Warriors held firm and freshman goalkeeper Mallory Xurvein was stellar in goal including a spectacular save late in the second half to secure the win.  The Warriors improve to 1-1 and will next host Bethel College on Wednesday, September 3rd at 7:00pm.

Warriors open season with a heartbreaker
August 25, 2008

The 2008 Indiana Tech Women's Soccer Team opened their season at the National Soccer Festival held on the campus of IPFW on a hot, steamy Saturday night.  The Warriors faced off with cross-town rival St. Francis and the result was one to remember.  St. Francis quickly took the game to the young Warriors but despite some near misses, Tech held steadfast until Cougar midfielder Mary Whisler hit a bomb from outside the 18 to beat the outstretched hands of freshman goalkeeper Mallory Xurvein (Ramsey, MN / Anoka) at the 18:05 mark.  The Warriors responded in fine fashion with a long range goal of their own from junior midfielder Alex Saba (Dearfield, MI / Crestwood) but the Cougars struck again shortly before halftime to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.  The second half saw some improvement from the Warriors play and a penalty kick was awarded to the Warriors at 53:55 and Saba stepped up cooly and put the ball in the corner of the net for her second of the night.  The remainder of the night belonged to the Warrior defense and the outstanding play of Mallory Xurvein who denied the Cougars any chance to win the game in regulation.  In the waning moments of the second half, junior midfielder Danielle Luther (Fort Wayne, IN / IPFW) split the Cougar defense and nearly won it for the Warriors only to have the shot drift wide.  In overtime, Mary Whisler hit the game winner, 6:28 into the first overtime.  The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, August 30th when they travel to Taylor University (Upland) for a 4:00pm match and their first home game will be Wednesday, September 3rd when they host Bethel College at 7:00pm.

Lady Warriors in the Community
by Jessica Saba

Within the past month, the Indiana Tech women’s soccer team has been busy with many off season events. With the season not actually starting until late summer, Coach Weber thought it would be nice for the team to spend some off-season time together by participating in different charity events.

The first event took place on Saturday, February 24th in Indianapolis. The team drove to the big city to participate in the “Polar Bear Plunge” for the Special Olympics. Kaylee Swanson, Gina Schulz, Ashley Mejia, Emily Davis, and Becky Scanlon were the participants. These five Lady Warriors raised $420 between them to contribute to the Special Olympics. All participants were invited to “plunge” into the freezing water if they wanted to. The only three lady warriors braved the cold, Gina, Becky and Kaylee.

“We had a great time bonding with each other during the after party, which was held at a local high school.”- Kaylee Swanson.

The second event that the team headlined was the “Huntington frozen Four,” which took place on Sunday, March 4th. Seven Lady Warriors participated in the four mile run and ending taking top stops in each of their respected age groups. The lady warriors raised money for this event also, and had a blast running together as a team.
